Horizon Library

Architecture | Drafting | 3D Design

The horizon is a unique aspect of our day-to-day lives. It is ever present in the distance; it is there when we wake up, when we go to sleep. It represents a journey to be made, a goal that is always just out of reach. It is 360° yet perceived as a straight line. When confronted with a large span of empty horizon, we are reminded of our miniature scale in comparison with the rest of the world. Naturally, a library, providing a seemingly unlimited supply of knowledge to the masses, should find inspiration in the mystic qualities of the horizon. This is it.

THE PROJECT

Create a new branch library as part of the Phoenix Public Library system including the integration of a “hybrid” program element not found in a typical library. This project served as my spring 2013 senior year studio project for the University of Utah’s College of Architecture.

THE CONCEPT

Design a more experiential public space, emphasizing awareness of architectonic qualities rather than 21st century gadgetry. The form consists of three sculptural volumes that reach out from the center of the library towards the horizon. Each volume houses one of three special reference libraries unique to the community. These reference libraries satisfy the special programming requirement and are as follows: automotive library, construction library, and household library.

SITE CONTEXT

Local community of South Mountain, Phoenix, AZ. Mixed demographics, with mainly African American and Latino communities. High percentage of industry and labor jobs.
